Why batteries die in the cold
A lead-acid battery rated at 600 cold-cranking amps at room temperature delivers roughly 60% of that at -18°C and as little as 40% at -30°C — exactly when the engine demands more cranking power to turn over thick oil. Blanket vs. pad vs. trickle charger
Wrap-style blankets suit top-mounted batteries with room around the case; flat pads slide under the battery in tight trays. A trickle charger or battery maintainer solves a different problem — charge level, not temperature — though smart chargers help on both fronts by keeping a battery topped up, which also protects it from freezing.
