How much should you budget?
Roughly $150–$450 or more for parts and installation is a starting point. That is the sum of CAA-Québec's published estimates: about $50–$200 for the heater and $100–$250 or more for installation. Your engine and the chosen kit can put the bill above that range.
This is a planning range, not a national average or an all-in shop quote. Confirm whether coolant, supplies and taxes are included. If a working heater is already fitted, you may only need a matching cord.
New installation, replacement cord, or another heater?
Compare quotes for the same job. Replacing a cord leaves the existing element in place; fitting a new coolant heater can involve opening the cooling system.

Ask your installer whether they supply the part. If you need to buy it, start with your exact vehicle and engine. A factory-installed heater may only need a matching replacement cord.

What makes one installation cost more?
The engine and access. Two vehicles with the same model name can use different engines and heater fittings. Ask whether other components must be removed to reach the installation point. Start with your model, year and engine, then have the shop confirm the application.
The heater design. An immersion heater can require coolant draining and refilling. A dry cartridge fits a dedicated bore; an inline system adds hose and mounting work. The manufacturer's procedure determines the work, not a universal one-hour allowance. Zerostart application references help identify the correct design.
What is already installed. A hidden or missing cord can look like a missing heater. If the heater has stopped working, diagnose the heater and cord before paying for a complete replacement.
What the quote includes. Compare the part number, labour, coolant, seals, supplies, tax and warranty. If you supply the part, ask the shop to approve it before purchase and explain its labour warranty.
Ask for an itemized installation quote
Send the shop your year, make, model, engine and VIN. Then ask:
- Does my engine already have a heater, and would a replacement cord solve the problem?
- Which heater part number will you install, and does it include the cord and seals?
- What labour time and rate are included? Does access require extra disassembly?
- Are coolant, refilling or bleeding, leak testing, and shop supplies included?
- What is the total after tax, and what warranty covers the part and installation?
- Will you install a customer-supplied part, and does that change the warranty or price?

How much does it cost to install a block heater in Canada?

Who installs block heaters?
Ask a dealership or independent repair shop that works on your engine. Give them the year, model, engine and VIN, and ask which heater they propose, what the quote includes and whether they install customer-supplied parts.
How long does block heater installation take?
There is no reliable one-hour rule for every vehicle. Ask for the labour allowance for your exact engine. Access, coolant draining and bleeding, cord routing, and leak checks affect the job. Adhesive pad heaters also need the manufacturer's specified preparation and curing time.
Is replacing a block heater cord cheaper than installing a new heater?
It can be, if the existing element works and only the detachable cord is damaged or missing. Ask for a diagnosis and a cord-only quote first. The replacement must match the installed heater; a similar-looking connector is not proof of compatibility.
Does Canadian Tire have one fixed block heater installation price?
We have not verified a nationwide installed price. Ask your local service department for an itemized quote for your vehicle. A retail heater or cord price does not include installation unless the offer explicitly says so.
Can I supply my own block heater to save money?
Ask the installer before ordering. Confirm the exact part, included cord and seals, and who covers the part and labour if it fails. A cheaper online part may not reduce the final bill if it is incompatible or the shop will not install it.
