Magnetic Block Heater

How it works

A magnetic heater is a sealed heating element in a cast housing with a strong magnet base. Stick it to the flattest steel section of your oil pan before plugging in, pull it off in the morning, toss it in the trunk. That's the whole system.

The catch: many modern oil pans are aluminum or composite, which a magnet won't grip. Check under your vehicle before buying. Heat transfer also depends entirely on surface contact — a curved or ribbed pan wastes much of the element's output.

Honest expectations

A magnetic heater warms the oil near the pan surface and takes the sharpest edge off a cold start. It will not match a frost plug heater's effect on the whole engine, and you must remember to remove it before driving away — forgotten magnets and their extension cords are a spring ritual in Prairie parking lots.
