The honest review
Dipstick heaters put a small element into the oil through the dipstick tube. The concept is neat; the physics are against it. The element is small, wattage is low, and heat concentrates near the rod — with reports over the years of localized oil scorching against the element.
Modern engines also have curved, narrow dipstick tubes that many rods simply won't navigate. If you can install any other heater on this page, do that instead. A dipstick heater's best use case is a vehicle you rarely drive, in a pinch, on a milder cold night.
