Magnetic Heaters for ATVs & UTVs
How to preheat a quad or side-by-side without installing an engine kit—and when a small adhesive pad is the better choice.

The short answer
Worth trying when the machine has an exposed flat steel sump. Many modern ATV cases are aluminum, so perform the magnet test before ordering.
Check before buying
Check the actual sump or steel engine plate—not the frame. A magnet holding on the frame does not prove the engine has a usable contact point.
A simple four-step setup
Remove or open the skid plate if needed.
Confirm the contact point is steel and flat.
Attach while the machine is parked, then plug in.
Remove the heater and secure the cord before moving.
Good fit
- ✓ Snow-plow ATVs
- ✓ Farm and acreage UTVs
- ✓ Machines shared between buildings
- ✓ Owners avoiding model-specific installation
Choose something else when…
- — The engine case and sump are aluminum
- — A skid plate blocks flat contact
- — The cord could touch the exhaust
- — A factory heater kit is required for warranty coverage
What size should you buy?
Rule of thumb: 100–200 W; avoid oversizing a tiny sump.
Best placement: A clean, flat steel sump surface away from the exhaust, CVT cover, plastic skid plates and suspension travel.
Magnetic heaters to compare
Start with the 200 W model for cars and small engines. Move up only when the equipment and heater manufacturer support the larger size.

Quick questions
Will it work on a Polaris Ranger or Can-Am Defender?
Only if your specific machine has a reachable flat steel sump area. Many have aluminum engine cases; those machines are better candidates for the correct OEM heater or a small adhesive pad rated for the application.
Is warming the battery more important?
Often, yes. A small powersports battery loses cranking power quickly in deep cold. A maintained, warm battery plus winter-grade oil can matter more than engine heat alone.
Vehicles with a permanent heater already catalogued
A magnet is the fallback. If your engine has a frost plug, the fitment page lists the element and cordset that belong in it.
