Reading the numbers: Zerostart 31/35- is the heater kit, 36- the detachable cordset ("lit" glows when the outlet is live). Kat's 11xxx is an element, 28xxx a cordset, 24xxx a pad. Location codes are the manufacturer's (LF = left front of block).

What it costs to plug in a Lexus IS 350C — and what it saves

No supplier lists a wattage for every IS 350C element, so this uses the 400 W figure typical of this body style. Natural Resources Canada recommends a timer that runs the heater two hours before you drive rather than all night — that is what the numbers below assume.

Province¢/kWhCost per 2 h plug-inFull winter (120 nights)Net per day
Quebec7.0$0.06$6.72+$0.32
Manitoba10.2$0.08$9.79+$0.30
Ontario (avg TOU)12.8$0.10$12.29+$0.28
Alberta14.0$0.11$13.44+$0.27
Saskatchewan15.5$0.12$14.88+$0.25
Nova Scotia17.9$0.14$17.18+$0.23

Natural Resources Canada rates the Lexus IS 350C at 12.2 L/100 km in city driving (median across 2006–2016 model years). On a 20 km winter commute that is about 2.4 L a day. NRCan measured that at −20 °C a block heater improves overall fuel economy by as much as 10% — roughly 0.24 L, or $0.38 of gasoline at $1.55/L. On a single short trip at −25 °C the saving can reach 25%. In most provinces the electricity costs less than the fuel it saves; in the priciest it roughly breaks even, and you still get the wear, defrost and cabin-heat benefits.

Block heater recalls on the Lexus IS 350C

Transport Canada has recorded a recall on the IS 350C that involves the block heater or its cord. Check your VIN before you buy parts — if your vehicle is affected, the repair is free.

Recall 2021723Block heater2011–2014· Electrical· 55,683 vehicles· 2021-11-24

Issue: This recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at Toyota or Lexus dealerships. On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt. Note: This recall only affects the following block heater/cord part numbers: C014003034 PK5A408J09 PU14000904 C014003151 PK5A408J13 PU14000905 C014000885 PK5A489J11 PU14000907 C014000888 PK5A489J22 PU14000909 C014000907 PK5A410H00 PU14000911 C014100904 PU14000900 PU14000913 C014100907 PU14000901 PU14003571 C014100911 PU14000902 PK5A489J14 PK5A408J05 PU14000903 Safety Risk: Engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Toyota recommends that you should stop using the engine block heater immediately. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

No tools? The stick-on option

If you'd rather skip the install entirely, a magnetic heater grips any flat steel surface — oil pan, block, transmission pan — and moves between vehicles. Check that the IS 350C's oil pan is steel first: a magnet won't hold on aluminum or composite pans.

First: check whether you already have one

Canadian-market vehicles are often fitted at the port or dealer and then forgotten by the next owner, so check the cord location above before you buy anything. If a cord is there, test it — a dead element and a dead cord look identical from the outside.

If you need one installed

Budget $40–$120 CAD for the part plus about an hour of labour, and book in October — Prairie shop calendars fill after the first cold snap.
