How to Test a Block Heater (Multimeter Guide)

The 5-minute multimeter test that tells you definitively whether your block heater works — plus the quick checks that don't need any tools.

Quick checks before you grab tools

Plug the heater into a known-good outlet (test the outlet with a lamp first — outdoor circuits and their GFCIs fail more often than heaters do). After 30–60 minutes, you should hear faint sizzling or ticking from the block, and the block near the element should feel warm to a bare hand. On a cold morning, a working heater also shows itself: the hood over the engine sheds frost sooner than the rest of the car.

No warmth, no sound, and a confirmed-live outlet? Time for the multimeter.

The resistance test (the definitive one)

Unplug everything. Set your multimeter to ohms (Ω, 200 range if manual). Touch one probe to each flat blade of the heater's plug. A healthy block heater reads roughly 10 to 40 ohms depending on wattage — a 400 W element lands around 36 Ω, a 1,000 W element around 14 Ω (the math: resistance ≈ 120² ÷ watts).

A reading of infinity/OL means the element or cord is open — burned out or broken wire. A reading near zero means a short. Either way, something needs replacing; the next test tells you whether it's the cord or the element.

Now test blade-to-ground: one probe on a plug blade, the other on the plug's round ground pin. This should read infinite (OL). Any continuity here means current can leak to the engine block — replace the heater or cord immediately; this is also what trips GFCI outlets.

Cord or element? Isolate it

Most block heater cords detach from the element with a weatherproof connector at the engine. Unplug the cord from the element and test the cord alone for continuity on each conductor (wiggle it while testing — intermittent breaks show up under flex). Cords fail far more often than elements: they get driven over, yanked out of outlets by moving vehicles, and embrittled by -40°C.

If the cord tests fine, test the element directly at its terminals with the same resistance expectations. A failed element in a frost-plug heater means a replacement element — usually cheaper than the diagnosis visit.
