No-shop option
Magnetic Block Heaters for Cars
A no-install cold-start option for cars with a flat steel oil pan—plus the 30-second magnet test to do before buying.

The short answer
A good temporary fix for an occasional cold snap, a second car, or anyone avoiding installation labour. It is not a full replacement for a coolant heater in regular -30°C weather.
Check before buying
Touch a fridge magnet to the lowest flat part of the oil pan. If it holds firmly, a magnetic heater can work there. Aluminum and composite pans will not hold it.
A simple four-step setup
Park and switch the engine off.
Wipe snow, salt and loose dirt from the contact area.
Attach the heater flat, then plug it into a winter-rated cord.
Unplug and remove it before driving.
Good fit
- ✓ Occasional deep-cold mornings
- ✓ Older cars with steel pans
- ✓ Renters and second vehicles
- ✓ Drivers who do not want a shop install
Choose something else when…
- — The pan is aluminum or composite
- — The only steel area is curved or heavily ribbed
- — You need dependable daily heat below -25°C
- — You are likely to forget it before driving
What size should you buy?
Rule of thumb: 200 W is the sensible car size.
Best placement: Flat steel on the bottom or lower side of the oil pan, clear of exhaust parts, plastic covers, drain plugs and wiring.
Magnetic heaters to compare
Start with the 200 W model for cars and small engines. Move up only when the equipment and heater manufacturer support the larger size.

Quick questions
Can a magnetic heater damage a car's oil pan?
A correctly sized thermostatic heater on a clean, flat steel pan is designed for this job. Do not attach it to plastic, aluminum, an exhaust component, or a surface the heater manufacturer excludes.
How long should it run on a car?
Start with two to four hours before departure. More time may help in severe cold, but a timer prevents needless all-night use.
Vehicles with a permanent heater already catalogued
A magnet is the fallback. If your engine has a frost plug, the fitment page lists the element and cordset that belong in it.
