Block Heater Tripping the Breaker or GFCI? Here's Why

A tripping GFCI means current is leaking somewhere it shouldn't. The three causes, how to isolate which one you have, and when it's the outlet's fault.

GFCI trips vs breaker trips — different problems

A GFCI (the outlet with test/reset buttons) trips on leakage: a few milliamps escaping to ground, usually through moisture or damaged insulation. A breaker trips on overload: too many amps on the circuit. Which one is tripping tells you where to look.

Overloads are simple math: a 1,500 W circulating heater plus a second vehicle's heater stack on the same 15 A outdoor circuit exceeds the limit. Split the load across circuits or stagger the timers. If a single 400 W heater trips a breaker, the circuit has other loads on it — or the problem is actually a short, which needs immediate attention.

The three leakage causes

Moisture in the connections is the big one: slush packed into the cord's element connector or the plug end melts, wets the contacts, and leaks current. Fix: unplug, dry thoroughly, blast with electrical contact cleaner, and re-seat. Prevent it with dielectric grease on the connector and pointing plug ends downward.

Damaged cord insulation is second: cracks from cold-flexing let salt water bridge conductor to ground. Inspect the full length; replace the cord if you find damage ($20–$60).

A leaking element is third: an aging element's internal insulation breaks down and passes current to the block. Confirm with the blade-to-ground-pin resistance test (should read infinite). A leaking element gets replaced — it's the same fault electric kettles die of.

When it's the outlet, not the heater

Outdoor GFCIs age poorly: cold, moisture, and years of trips make some hair-triggered. If your heater passes the ground-leakage multimeter test and runs fine on another GFCI-protected outlet, the original receptacle is likely worn — a cheap swap for an electrician. What you should never do is run the heater from a non-GFCI outlet to "solve" the tripping: the GFCI is telling you that current is going somewhere unintended, and outdoors in slush, that somewhere can include you.
