BMW X5 engines & block heater part numbers
Engine list built from Natural Resources Canada model-year data. Part numbers are catalog candidates unless a source review is shown for that application. Confirm the exact engine code, model year and installation port before ordering; an Amazon listing match does not confirm vehicle fitment.

Reading the numbers: Zerostart 31/35- is the heater kit, 36- the detachable cordset ("lit" glows when the outlet is live). Kat's 11xxx is an element, 28xxx a cordset, 24xxx a pad. Location codes are the manufacturer's (LF = left front of block).

What it costs to plug in a BMW X5 — and what it saves
The catalogued element for the X5 draws 400 W. Natural Resources Canada recommends a timer that runs the heater two hours before you drive rather than all night — that is what the numbers below assume.
| Province | ¢/kWh | Cost per 2 h plug-in | Full winter (120 nights) | Net per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quebec | 7.0 | $0.06 | $6.72 | +$0.45 |
| Manitoba | 10.2 | $0.08 | $9.79 | +$0.43 |
| Ontario (avg TOU) | 12.8 | $0.10 | $12.29 | +$0.41 |
| Alberta | 14.0 | $0.11 | $13.44 | +$0.40 |
| Saskatchewan | 15.5 | $0.12 | $14.88 | +$0.38 |
| Nova Scotia | 17.9 | $0.14 | $17.18 | +$0.37 |
Natural Resources Canada rates the BMW X5 at 16.4 L/100 km in city driving (median across 1999–2026 model years). On a 20 km winter commute that is about 3.3 L a day. NRCan measured that at −20 °C a block heater improves overall fuel economy by as much as 10% — roughly 0.33 L, or $0.51 of gasoline at $1.55/L. On a single short trip at −25 °C the saving can reach 25%. In most provinces the electricity costs less than the fuel it saves; in the priciest it roughly breaks even, and you still get the wear, defrost and cabin-heat benefits.

Cold-weather recalls on the BMW X5
No block-heater recall is on file for the X5, but Transport Canada has recorded cold-weather and cooling-system recalls worth checking before you install anything.
Issue: On certain vehicles, fluid from the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system could leak on the intake air hose. As a result, the fluid could enter the electrical connector for the water pump and cause a short circuit. Safety Risk: A short circuit can create the risk of a fire, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off. Corrective Actions: To reduce the safety risk, BMW advises you to park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs are completed. BMW will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the water pump and electrical connector. The dealer will also install a shield on the connector.
On certain vehicles, the auxiliary water pump (which cools the turbocharger after the engine is turned OFF) can overheat and fail. This could result in a vehicle fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the auxiliary water pump. Note: Owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors until the remedy is applied. Additional note: This is an expansion of recalls 2011-376 and 2012-008.

Note: Owners are advised to park the vehicle outdoors until the remedy is applied.
Certain 550I, 650I cabriolet, 650I coupe, and X5 vehicles equipped with a V8 engine, operated in conditions of below-freezing temperatures combined with low humidity, may suffer an electrostatic discharge at the fuel rails. If this were to occur, the engine's Electronic Control Unit (ECU) could be affected such that engine stalling could result. If the engine were to stall, this would result in a loss of power steering. Loss of power steering could lead to a condition in which vehicle handling and control were impaired. Correction: Dealers will install two additional ground cable between the fuel rails and the ground connection of the ignition coils.

No tools? The stick-on option
If you'd rather skip the install entirely, a magnetic heater grips any flat steel surface — oil pan, block, transmission pan — and moves between vehicles. Check that the X5's oil pan is steel first: a magnet won't hold on aluminum or composite pans.

First: check whether you already have one
Canadian-market vehicles are often fitted at the port or dealer and then forgotten by the next owner, so check the cord location above before you buy anything. If a cord is there, test it — a dead element and a dead cord look identical from the outside.
If you need one installed
Budget $40–$120 CAD for the part plus about an hour of labour, and book in October — Prairie shop calendars fill after the first cold snap.
