Toyota Tacoma Block Heater Guide

Find the part for your engine

Check the engine size on your vehicle documents or under-hood label. Choose it explicitly even when only one option appears.

Already have a factory heater? A missing power cord may be all you need. Match the connector before ordering.

What the manufacturer sources establish

Sources checked . Only engine rows with an individual application review have reviewed fitment; other rows remain unconfirmed.

  • The manufacturer lists heater 3100154 and replacement cord 3600150 for those applications. The sheet rates the cartridge kit at 202 W; do not assume a generic 400 W element or extend the 2024 listing into 2025–2026.

Factory availability

Confirm equipment using the VIN, original build record or accessory invoice. Model name and Canadian registration do not establish that a heater is installed.

Typical wattage: Read the installed heater label; wattage varies by kit

Cord location

Routing depends on the installed kit. Follow its installation instructions or have the installer identify the cord; a grille-side cable alone does not identify the heater.

Use the wattage printed on your heater and your electricity rate. A 400 W example uses 0.8 kWh over two hours; this is not a verified wattage or fuel-saving estimate for every Tacoma.

Block heater recalls on the Toyota Tacoma

Transport Canada has recorded 2 recalls on the Tacoma that involve the block heater or its cord. Check your VIN before you buy parts — if your vehicle is affected, the repair is free.

Recall 2021723Block heater2005–2019· Electrical· 55,683 vehicles· 2021-11-24

Issue: This recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at Toyota or Lexus dealerships. On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt. Note: This recall only affects the following block heater/cord part numbers: C014003034 PK5A408J09 PU14000904 C014003151 PK5A408J13 PU14000905 C014000885 PK5A489J11 PU14000907 C014000888 PK5A489J22 PU14000909 C014000907 PK5A410H00 PU14000911 C014100904 PU14000900 PU14000913 C014100907 PU14000901 PU14003571 C014100911 PU14000902 PK5A489J14 PK5A408J05 PU14000903 Safety Risk: Engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Toyota recommends that you should stop using the engine block heater immediately. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

Recall 2017363Block heater2016–2017· Electrical· 39,189 vehicles· 2017-07-20

On certain vehicles, the electrical power cords of some dealer installed block heaters may have been improperly manufactured, causing the wires to contact each other, resulting in a short circuit. A short circuit could lead to a fire which would increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: For vehicles where the subject block heater was approved for installation, the dealer will replace the block heater assembly with a new one of an improved design. For vehicles where the subject block heater was not approved for installation, dealers will remove the block heater assembly. In the interim, until the remedy can be performed, dealers will cut the plug end from the block heater cord to disable the block heater's operation.

Canadian buyer checklist

Three checks before spending money

1. Check for a cord

Routing depends on the installed kit. Follow its installation instructions or have the installer identify the cord; a grille-side cable alone does not identify the heater.

2. Match the engine

Confirm displacement, fuel and model year against the table. OEM accessory numbers can vary by VIN and market.

3. Check recalls

Search the VIN in the Transport Canada database before using an unfamiliar factory heater or cord.

No exact-fit listing? Use the three-question heater selector for a safe fallback.

Where to look for the Toyota Tacoma block heater cord

Routing depends on the installed kit. Follow its installation instructions or have the installer identify the cord; a grille-side cable alone does not identify the heater. Use a flashlight from above and through the lower grille, then check behind the bumper cover without pulling on an unidentified wire. A factory cord may be capped and clipped or zip-tied out of sight.

Found damage? Use the cord identifier before choosing between a plug-end repair and a complete cordset.

Surface heaters: check mounting compatibility

A surface heater needs a compatible mounting material, enough clearance and a location approved by its manufacturer. These products are alternatives to investigate, not confirmed applications for every engine on this page.

First: check whether you already have one

Check the build record or accessory invoice and identify any installed heater before buying parts. If a cord is present, test it — a dead element and a dead cord look identical from the outside.

If you need one installed

Ask for a quote that identifies the exact kit, included cord and labour for your engine. See our installation guide for questions to ask before booking.

FAQ
