Why stored batteries die by spring
A parked vehicle still spends battery: alarm, computers and self-discharge bleed one to a few percent of charge per week. That alone won't kill a healthy battery in a season — what kills it is chemistry. A discharged lead-acid battery sulfates (its plates grow crystals that never fully dissolve), and worse, its electrolyte loses freeze protection: a full battery is safe to about -60°C, a dead one freezes near -7°C. Freeze it once and the case cracks or the plates warp; the battery is scrap. The motorcycle, boat, classic car or seldom-driven truck that 'just needs a boost' in April usually needs a battery.
Trickle charger vs smart maintainer
An old-school trickle charger pushes a small fixed current forever — left connected for five months it slowly overcharges, boiling off electrolyte. What you want for storage is a smart maintainer (Battery Tender, NOCO Genius, CTEK and similar): it charges to full, stops, and tops up only when voltage sags. Connect it in November, forget it until April. For a vehicle stored where there's no outlet, the alternatives are disconnecting the negative terminal (cuts parasitic drain; the battery then holds for months if it starts full) or bringing the battery indoors onto a maintainer.
Two cold-weather rules: charge in the warmest spot available — a battery below roughly -10°C accepts charge poorly, and lithium-chemistry batteries must not be charged below freezing at all, which is why quality lithium boosters and LiFePO4 packs have low-temperature cutoffs. And before storage, charge to full first; a maintainer maintains, it doesn't rescue a flat battery.
For the car you drive every day
Daily drivers usually don't need a maintainer — the alternator does the job if the drives are long enough. The winter exception is the short-trip commuter: ten minutes of -25°C driving with the blower, lights and rear defrost running can put back less charge than the start took out, and the battery ratchets down over weeks. If that's your pattern, an overnight maintainer session every couple of weekends keeps the battery ahead — and a battery blanket wired in with the block heater keeps it warm enough to accept charge in the first place.
