Winter kills car batteries two ways: cold cuts the cranking power a charged battery can deliver, and short cold-weather trips mean the alternator never fully recharges it. How many amps do you actually need?
The old rule of thumb is about 10 percent of the battery's amp-hour rating for recharging, and 1–2 A is plenty for maintenance regardless of size. Bigger isn't better for storage — it's just faster for recovery.

The winter features worth paying for
Temperature compensation. A cold battery needs a higher charge voltage than a warm one. Chargers with a built-in thermal sensor (NOCO Genius series, CTEK MXS 5.0) adjust automatically; bargain chargers calibrated for a 20 °C garage chronically undercharge a battery sitting at -25 °C in the driveway.

FAQ
Can I leave a battery maintainer connected all winter?
Yes — that's the whole point of a smart maintainer. Once the battery reaches full charge it switches to a float or pulse mode that only replaces what self-discharge and the vehicle's electronics drain. Old-style unregulated trickle chargers are the ones you can't leave unattended.
Can you charge a frozen battery?
Never. A deeply discharged battery's electrolyte is mostly water and can freeze solid around -10 to -20 °C; charging a frozen battery can crack the case or, in the worst case, cause it to rupture. Bring it somewhere warm, let it thaw completely, then charge. A fully charged battery, by contrast, is protected to about -60 °C — one more reason to keep it topped up.
What's the difference between a trickle charger and a smart maintainer?
A trickle charger pushes a small fixed current whether the battery needs it or not, which eventually overcharges it. A smart maintainer monitors voltage and delivers current only when needed. They're often confused because both are small and slow — but only one is safe to leave connected for months.
Do I need an AGM setting?
If your vehicle has an AGM battery — common in anything with start-stop, and standard in many trucks and German cars — yes. AGM batteries want a slightly different charge voltage, and most quality smart chargers (NOCO Genius, CTEK MXS) have a dedicated mode. Charging an AGM on a flooded profile shortens its life.
Will a block heater charge my battery?
No. A block heater warms the engine coolant so the oil flows and the engine cranks easier — it does nothing for the battery's state of charge. The battery-side equivalents are a battery blanket (keeps it warm) and a maintainer (keeps it full). For -30 °C outdoor parking, run all three on one outdoor timer bar.
