Car Batteries in Cold Weather: CCA, AGM and Winter Survival

What cold-cranking amps actually mean

CCA is the one battery spec defined by winter: the amps a new, fully charged battery can deliver for 30 seconds at -18°C (0°F) without dropping below 7.2 volts. A 650 CCA battery can push 650 amps through a frozen starter for half a minute. It's a directly comparable number across brands — and the spec that matters in Canada, far more than reserve capacity or amp-hours.

The catch: CCA is rated at -18°C, and Canadian winters go far below that. At -30°C, available cranking power falls to roughly 40–50% of the rating, while the thickened oil raises the torque the starter demands. A battery that's marginal in October is dead in January — cold doesn't kill batteries so much as expose the ones already dying.

Picking the right CCA

Match or beat the vehicle manufacturer's CCA spec — never go under. For a car parked outside in a real winter (Prairies, northern Ontario, Quebec), a cushion of 100–200 CCA over spec is cheap insurance. Diesels are their own category: glow plugs or a grid heater can pull 100+ amps before cranking even starts, which is why HD diesel pickups run two batteries. Replace both at the same time; a new battery paired with a dying one gets dragged down to the weak one's level.

Age matters more than brand. Lead-acid batteries give reliable service for four to six years; past that, every deep-cold morning is a coin flip. A fall load test at any parts store is free and takes five minutes — it's the single best predictor of whether you'll need a boost in February.

AGM, flooded, or heated?

AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries deliver higher cranking amps for their size, recharge faster, tolerate deep discharge better and don't spill — genuinely better winter batteries, at roughly 1.5–2× the price. Cars with start-stop systems usually require AGM. For a commuter that lives outside north of the 49th, the upgrade is worth it; for a garage-kept car in a milder climate, a quality flooded battery does fine.

The cheaper trick most people skip: keep the battery warm in the first place. A battery blanket — a heated wrap that plugs in alongside the block heater — keeps the battery near 0°C overnight, which preserves most of its cranking amps and lets it accept charge on the drive. On diesels with twin batteries it's practically standard equipment in the cold belt.
