How Long Should a Block Heater Be Plugged In?
Four hours is the magic number. Here's the evidence, what happens if you plug in longer, and how to time it without thinking about it.
The 4-hour rule
Plug in 3–4 hours before you drive. Cold-weather testing — including the oft-cited University of Saskatchewan work — shows an engine on a block heater reaches its maximum temperature in about four hours. After that, heat gained from the element equals heat lost to the air, and the engine temperature plateaus. Hour five costs you electricity and gains you nothing.
In milder cold (-10 to -15°C), even two hours gets you most of the benefit. In severe cold with wind, four hours is the number; wind strips heat faster but doesn't change when the plateau arrives, only how high it sits.
Is longer harmful?
No — just wasteful. Block heaters are built for continuous duty, and plenty of Canadians leave them plugged in all night every night for decades without incident. The costs are the extra 30–60 cents a night and marginally more wear on the element. If overnight is your only practical option (no timer, shared outlet), do it without guilt.
One caution: repeated plug-in cycles on a damaged cord are the real risk. Inspect the cord end each fall — corroded or heat-discoloured blades mean replace the cord, not tape it.
Set-and-forget timing
A mechanical outdoor timer ($15–$30) set to fire 4 hours before your departure is the classic answer. Smart outdoor plugs add schedule changes from your phone and work well down to their rated temperature — check the spec, as some consumer smart plugs aren't rated below -20°C. On Ontario's ultra-low overnight rate, timing the heater for 3:00–7:00 a.m. means you're heating on the cheapest electricity of the day.

Does a block heater have a thermostat?
