What it costs to plug in a Jeep Grand Cherokee — and what it saves

The catalogued element for the Grand Cherokee draws 400 W. Natural Resources Canada recommends a timer that runs the heater two hours before you drive rather than all night — that is what the numbers below assume.

Province¢/kWhCost per 2 h plug-inFull winter (120 nights)Net per day
Quebec7.0$0.06$6.72+$0.48
Manitoba10.2$0.08$9.79+$0.45
Ontario (avg TOU)12.8$0.10$12.29+$0.43
Alberta14.0$0.11$13.44+$0.42
Saskatchewan15.5$0.12$14.88+$0.41
Nova Scotia17.9$0.14$17.18+$0.39

Natural Resources Canada rates the Jeep Grand Cherokee at 17.2 L/100 km in city driving (median across 1995–2026 model years). On a 20 km winter commute that is about 3.4 L a day. NRCan measured that at −20 °C a block heater improves overall fuel economy by as much as 10% — roughly 0.34 L, or $0.53 of gasoline at $1.55/L. On a single short trip at −25 °C the saving can reach 25%. In most provinces the electricity costs less than the fuel it saves; in the priciest it roughly breaks even, and you still get the wear, defrost and cabin-heat benefits.

Cold-weather recalls on the Jeep Grand Cherokee

No block-heater recall is on file for the Grand Cherokee, but Transport Canada has recorded cold-weather and cooling-system recalls worth checking before you install anything.

Recall 20141122011–2014· Brakes· 42,380 vehicles· 2014-04-02

On certain vehicles, the centre shell of the brake booster may corrode. A corroded centre shell could allow water to get inside the brake booster, which in a cold climate may freeze. This could result in inadequate braking, increasing stopping distances and increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect and replace any brake booster that has an unacceptable loss of vacuum pressure, all affected vehicles will have a water diverter shield added to the brake booster.

Recall 20174502011–2014· Brakes· 39,817 vehicles· 2017-09-18

On certain vehicles, a brake booster shield may have been incorrectly installed as part of recall P14/2014-112. An incorrectly installed shield could be less effective in diverting water away from the brake booster, creating the possibility of corrosion allowing water to get inside. In a cold climate, water inside the brake booster could freeze limiting the braking ability of the vehicle, resulting in longer braking distances, increasing the risk of crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect the installation of the brake booster shield and perform repairs as necessary.

No tools? The stick-on option

If you'd rather skip the install entirely, a magnetic heater grips any flat steel surface — oil pan, block, transmission pan — and moves between vehicles. Check that the Grand Cherokee's oil pan is steel first: a magnet won't hold on aluminum or composite pans.

First: check whether you already have one

Canadian-market vehicles are often fitted at the port or dealer and then forgotten by the next owner, so check the cord location above before you buy anything. If a cord is there, test it — a dead element and a dead cord look identical from the outside.

If you need one installed

Budget $40–$120 CAD for the part plus about an hour of labour, and book in October — Prairie shop calendars fill after the first cold snap.
