Find the part for your engine

Check the engine size on your vehicle documents or under-hood label. Choose it explicitly even when only one option appears.

Already have a factory heater? A missing power cord may be all you need. Match the connector before ordering.

Volkswagen Atlas engines & block heater part numbers

Engine list built from Natural Resources Canada model-year data. Part numbers are catalog candidates unless a source review is shown for that application. Confirm the exact engine code, model year and installation port before ordering; an Amazon listing match does not confirm vehicle fitment.

Reading the numbers: Zerostart 31/35- is the heater kit, 36- the detachable cordset ("lit" glows when the outlet is live). Kat's 11xxx is an element, 28xxx a cordset, 24xxx a pad. Location codes are the manufacturer's (LF = left front of block).

What it costs to plug in a Volkswagen Atlas — and what it saves

No supplier lists a wattage for every Atlas element, so this uses the 600 W figure typical of this body style. Natural Resources Canada recommends a timer that runs the heater two hours before you drive rather than all night — that is what the numbers below assume.

Province¢/kWhCost per 2 h plug-inFull winter (120 nights)Net per day
Quebec7.0$0.08$10.08+$0.31
Manitoba10.2$0.12$14.69+$0.27
Ontario (avg TOU)12.8$0.15$18.43+$0.24
Alberta14.0$0.17$20.16+$0.22
Saskatchewan15.5$0.19$22.32+$0.20
Nova Scotia17.9$0.21$25.78+$0.18

Natural Resources Canada rates the Volkswagen Atlas at 12.6 L/100 km in city driving (median across 2018–2026 model years). On a 20 km winter commute that is about 2.5 L a day. NRCan measured that at −20 °C a block heater improves overall fuel economy by as much as 10% — roughly 0.25 L, or $0.39 of gasoline at $1.55/L. On a single short trip at −25 °C the saving can reach 25%. In most provinces the electricity costs less than the fuel it saves; in the priciest it roughly breaks even, and you still get the wear, defrost and cabin-heat benefits.

Block heater recalls on the Volkswagen Atlas

Transport Canada has recorded a recall on the Atlas that involves the block heater or its cord. Check your VIN before you buy parts — if your vehicle is affected, the repair is free.

Recall 2020353Block heater2018–2019· Label· 132,432 vehicles· 2020-08-04

Issue: On certain vehicles, the warning label for the engine block heater cable is written in English only. As a result, a French user may not receive important safety information about how to use the engine block heater. A label that is not provided in both official languages could create confusion. Safety Risk: User confusion could increase the risk of injury when trying to use the block heater. Corrective Actions: The company will mail each owner a new label for the block heater cable. If you would like help installing the label, you can contact a dealer for assistance.

Recall 20205562021· Visual System· 2,564 vehicles· 2020-11-18

Issue: On certain vehicles, a software problem could cause the rearview camera image not to display or cause it to freeze. Canadian regulations require the rearview image to display when the transmission is shifted into reverse gear. Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that does not display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Volkswagen will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to update the rearview camera software.

No tools? The stick-on option

If you'd rather skip the install entirely, a magnetic heater grips any flat steel surface — oil pan, block, transmission pan — and moves between vehicles. Check that the Atlas's oil pan is steel first: a magnet won't hold on aluminum or composite pans.

First: check whether you already have one

Canadian-market vehicles are often fitted at the port or dealer and then forgotten by the next owner, so check the cord location above before you buy anything. If a cord is there, test it — a dead element and a dead cord look identical from the outside.

If you need one installed

Budget $40–$120 CAD for the part plus about an hour of labour, and book in October — Prairie shop calendars fill after the first cold snap.
