ATV & UTV Block Heaters: Polaris, Can-Am, Honda
Plowing the lane, feeding cattle, checking the trapline — in most of Canada an ATV or side-by-side works harder in January than July. Yet almost none of them leave the factory with a block heater, and the frost plugs on a modern liquid-cooled quad are buried where no wrench will ever reach.
The working answers are three: the OEM accessory heater kit if your machine has one (Polaris and Can-Am both sell them for their utility lines), a universal silicone pad heater on the crankcase or sump for everything else, and — doing more than either — a warm, fully charged battery.

Most ATV engines hold 2 L of oil or less, so 25–50 W is the right size; a big-bore side-by-side (Ranger XP 1000, Defender HD10) can take 100 W on the sump. Degrease the surface, bond the pad per its instructions, and route the cord away from the exhaust and suspension travel. An hour or two of plug-in time is plenty for this little oil.
OEM accessory engine heater kits
Polaris sells engine heater kits for the Ranger and Sportsman utility lines, and BRP sells one for the Can-Am Defender — thermostat-controlled elements that install against the engine cases, with a plug that exits near the rack or bumper. Order by VIN from a dealer or the brands' online accessory catalogs; they're model-year specific. If you plow snow for pay, the OEM kit is worth it purely for the warranty-safe install.
The battery is the real cold-start problem
A modern EFI quad will fire at -30°C without any engine heat — if the starter spins fast enough. The small powersports batteries (often 12–18 Ah) lose the most cranking capacity in the cold, and a quad parked outside sits at ambient. A battery blanket wrapped around the battery box plus a smart float charger through the winter does more for reliable starts than any engine heater. If the machine lives far from an outlet, pull the battery indoors between uses.
Oil finishes the job: run the coldest grade your manual allows (0W-40 synthetic is factory fill for many Polaris and Can-Am machines) and let the engine idle a full minute before loading it — the gearbox and diff fluids are still frozen even after the engine catches.
Belt-drive machines need a warm-up too
CVT belts turn brittle in deep cold, and a hard launch with a frozen belt is how belts get glazed or thrown. After a cold start, let the machine creep for the first few hundred metres so the belt and clutches warm gradually. Some owners aim a pad heater's warmth at the CVT cover instead of the sump for exactly this reason — on a machine used for short plow runs, the belt is often the first thing to complain.
