A snowmobile is the one machine designed to live at -30°C — and it still starts easier warm. There's no frost-plug heater for a sled: the engines are compact, the plugs (where they exist) are unreachable, and the whole machine is wrapped in plastic. Two-strokes: technique beats heat
A carbureted or E-TEC two-stroke doesn't have an oil sump to warm — its cold-start story is fuel, spark and cranking speed. Fresh fuel, the choke/primer ritual the manual describes, and (for pull-start) a smooth full-length pull do the work. If a two-stroke lives outside and starts hard, the highest-value upgrades are a fresh plug set and, for electric-start models, battery heat.
The one heater trick that applies to any sled: park it out of the wind. A sled cold-soaked at -30°C in still air starts noticeably easier than the same sled at -25°C in a 30 km/h wind that's been scrubbing heat from the engine bay all night.
Trailering and the frozen-track problem
The other winter failure isn't the engine — it's the track frozen to the trailer deck or the ground. Park on planks or a rubber mat, and break the track free by rocking before you throttle up; a frozen-down track can strip lugs on launch. Some riders point a pad heater at the chaincase for the same reason: gear oil at -35°C is nearly solid, and the first hundred metres should be gentle regardless.
